Wyatt’s Success Story – iPad and speech apps

Wyatt is a toddler with light skin and short blond hair. He sits in a booster seat at a kitchen table, tapping an iPad and grinning while the grownup kneeling next to him models sleeping on her hands.
This winter, Wyatt had a successful trial with speech communication assistive technology (AT) using ABLE Tech’s Short-Term Loan Program. Wyatt, his family, and SoonerStart providers trialed an iPad and multiple speech communication apps. Before trying the device, Wyatt struggled to communicate his wants and needs.
Wyatt trialed the communication apps LAMP Words for Life and Proloquo2Go. LAMP Words for Life is a full English vocabulary augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) language app that combines the power of the Prentke Romich Company (PRC) Unity® language system with Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP™) principles and strategies. LAMP™ is a therapeutic approach based on neurological and motor learning.
Proloquo2Go is a completely customizable software designed for a range of fine and visual motor skills. The app’s versatility makes it useful for non-verbal individuals with diagnoses like autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and more or speech impediments like apraxia and dysarthria.
Since the device trial, Wyatt is now able to engage with others and communicate what he wants and needs with a variety of settings! His mom says he especially loves requesting specific food and drinks, as well as choosing colors while coloring with his sister. Wyatt’s confidence has grown since being able to communicate effectively and is more open to trying new things and new experiences moving forward!
