Partner Success Story

The Alzheimer’s Association Oklahoma Chapter works with families caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients to help them with disease education, resources, and referrals. The Alzheimer’s Association partners with ABLE Tech to help caregivers access and acquire assistive technology (AT) when caring for loved ones. One of the pieces often demonstrated is the Busy Board. This board is a 12” by 12” piece of painted plywood with locks, zippers, handles, fasteners, etc., attached. The Busy Board keeps hands busy and is a perfect solution because it engages individuals with Alzheimer’s appropriately occupied and prevents them from taking things apart, like the remote control.

For an Eagle Scout project, one high school student, Alex, completed 20 Busy Boards for the Alzheimer’s Association. He wanted to honor Diane Irene Di Mascio, his grandmother, who lives with the disease while also bringing joy to others. The Busy Boards are now in memory care facilities around the Oklahoma City area. Residents have enjoyed using the boards!
