Spotlight on Success: Stillwater EyeCare
Becky is a Payne County resident who began losing vision from macular degeneration about one and a half years ago. At the time she was semi-retired, independent, and enjoyed doing accounting work for her small business, just as she had for decades. As her vision loss progressed, she was unable to read and perform hobbies such as embroidery and sewing. Her diagnosis and subsequent loss of vision were not only preventing her from completing these activities, but it started making her feel isolated and helpless.
Becky was referred to Dr. Marshall Walker at Stillwater EyeCare who has a partnership with Oklahoma ABLE Tech to provide assistive technology (AT) device demonstrations. After a low vision evaluation, she began a vision rehabilitation program including the use of AT to maximize her functional vision. Through ABLE Tech’s Short-Term Device Loan Program, she was able to try several devices at home to assist with her accounting work and hobbies. Over the course of a few short weeks, Becky was again able to see numbers and complete her hobbies! At her last appointment with Dr. Walker, she commented tearfully that AT has changed her life and given her hope again.
