Spotlight on Success: Alzheimer’s Association of Oklahoma
The Alzheimer’s Association Oklahoma Chapter works with families caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients to help them with disease education, resources, and referrals. The Alzheimer’s Association partners with ABLE Tech to help caregivers access and acquire assistive technology (AT) when caring for loved ones.
Much of the support that is provided to caregivers include finding ways to use recreational AT with loved ones to promote positive behaviors, prevent boredom, and provide opportunities to maintain skills and interests.
One of the recreational AT items often demonstrated is the Busy Board. This board is a 12” by 12” piece of painted plywood with locks, zippers, handles, fasteners, etc. The Busy Board keeps hands busy and is a perfect solution as it engages individuals with Alzheimer’s/dementia. The Busy Board appropriately occupies loved ones/patients by engaging them in a positive activity. The Busy Board pictured here was made as an Eagle Scout project and donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
The Alzheimer’s Association Oklahoma Chapter also provides education and support to all those facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias through the community, including those living with the disease, caregivers, health care professionals, and families. The Alzheimer's Association can provide these services at no cost through grants, gifts, and fundraising. Advocacy for the needs and rights of those facing Alzheimer’s disease and advancing critical research toward methods of treatment, prevention, and, ultimately, a cure, remain the heart of the Alzheimer’s Association commitment.
