It's 2020 and the ADA is Turning 30!
Happy 30th anniversary to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) becoming Federal Law! This groundbreaking legislation has impacted the lives of people with disabilities in the United States by working to prohibit discrimination in areas including employment, transportation, public accommodations, and communications. The important national changes and standards are achieved and enforced through the federal government and left for interpretation by state and local government programs and services.
Since its passing in 1990, various areas of the Act have been well implemented, while other areas are still struggling to enjoy the same success. People with disabilities are still fighting for better rights and accommodations across the country.
ABLE Tech continues to support equal opportunities for people with disabilities by providing diverse assistive technology (AT) programs and services.
Upcoming Events
Oklahoma ABLE Tech Medical Equipment Drive
Do you have gently-used medical equipment and/or supplies collecting dust in your home or business? ABLE Tech’s Device Reutilization Program, in conjunction with Telligen, will be hosting an equipment drive on March 6, 2020, from 9am to 3pm. The drive will be held at the Credit Union House of Oklahoma, located at 631 E Hill St in Oklahoma City right on Lincoln Boulevard.
Oklahoma ABLE Tech currently has close to 300 Oklahomans on a waiting list to receive life-changing durable medical equipment (DME), and new requests for DME are submitted to the program every day. Items needed most include:
- Shower Chairs/Benches/Stools
- Wheelchairs (Manual & Power)
- Bariatric DME
Reusing donated equipment has saved taxpayers millions of dollars!
If you would like to donate, but cannot make it to the equipment drive on March 6, at the Credit Union House of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, please call 405-523-4810 or 1-833-431-9706 to arrange a drop-off or pick up of the item(s) being donated.

Spotlight on Success
Slade is a 3-year-old from Cleveland County who is receiving services through the Moore Autism Center. He used ABLE Tech’s Short-Term Loan Program to trial a NovaChat for communication during therapy. Previously, Slade’s primary means of expression were screaming and crying. With the use of the NovaChat in therapy, he is learning to communicate words and phrases by imitating the device. Slade can now express his wants, needs, and ideas with his speech-generating device.
Assistive Technology Device Feature
Instant Language Assistant (ILA)
The Instant Language Assistant (ILA) Pro by TranslateLive allows people to have a natural conversation that is translated in real-time in over 120 languages and dialects. Just speak or type, and the conversation is instantly translated and shown to both people in real-time. It is encrypted, private, and accessible for those with disabilities. The 2-device real-time translation lets the user see the full conversation like text messaging, so the individuals communicating can see the conversation on both sides as it is happening in real-time. ILA supports accents to make translations much more accurate than any other translation products on the market today. ILA is secure, encrypted and HIPAA compliant. There is also an option to save the conversation at the end, as well as the ability to add a live interpreter to the conversation if needed.
